Gila Gamliel was born in Gedera in 1974, and did her military service in the Israel Air Force, where she attained the rank of sergeant, heading an air force investigative staff.

Gamliel went on to attend the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, where she was awarded a BA in Middle Eastern history and philosophy and an MA in philosophy.

Her public service began in her student days when she served as chair of the university's student union, and also became the first woman to serve as head of the National Students' Association.

Gamliel joined the Likud and first ran for a place in the 15th Knesset when the party had a weak showing, gaining only 19 seats. In 2003 she won an impressive 11th place on the Likud list for the elections that year and became a Knesset member when the party won a resounding victory, taking 38 seats.

During her first term in the Knesset she chaired the committee on the Status of Women, and in March 2005 was appointed Deputy Minister of Agriculture.

Extra-parliamentary activities include membership in the Young Guard of the Israeli Institute for Democracy; membership in the Negev Forum; the New Israel Philosophy Association, and the Na'amat Conference, as a representative of Likud Women.
