Michael Eitan

Michael Eitan was born in Tel Aviv in 1944, to parents who made aliyah from Galicia in the 1930s. He Hebraicized his name by dropping the family name Hirschprong and making his middle name Eitan into his family name.

Michael Eitan was educated in Tel Aviv and after IDF service, attended Tel Aviv Law School where he became an active member of the Herut Party and head of the Student Organization there, thus beginning his life-long commitment to politics.

Among his first activities was establishing the Herut Young Guard and initiating the Kochav Yair Settlement Project, where he also resided (until his recent move to Sderot in solidarity with the residents under fire).

Other well-known initiatives include the Neighborhood Renewal Project in Tel-Aviv, the Settlement Stars Project to build community settlements along the old ‘Green Line', finding housing solutions for masses of new immigrants, and introducing Internet to the Knesset and government workings.

Michael Eitan has been a member of the 11-17th Knessets, serving from 1984 to 2006, and his record of attendance has been 99%! He is known as a parliamentarian who uses his thorough knowledge of the bylaws of the Knesset to achieve parliamentary goals, and was twice awarded the prize for the outstanding Knesset member.

 Among his government positions he has served as Minister of Science and Technology and Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Office.

 Eitan is a resident of the settlement of Kokhav Ya'ir, and was a founder and director of the settlement project.
