Minister Yossi Peled meteting with Mr. Daniel Benaim

Minister Yossi Peled met yesterday, Wednesday, in the Knesset with Daniel Benaim, Senator John Kerry’s assistant. Minister Peled said that in order to achieve an agreement between Israel and the Palestinians, the American government should show respect and understanding to the Israeli government’s stands and avoid pressuring Prime Minister Netanyahu. The Americans need to understand that Prime Minister Netanyahu is acting under certain coalition considerations that cannot be ignored. Minister Peled mentioned that Netanyahu made an essential step by saying things by speaking clearly in his speech. A complicated political procedure usually begins with a declaration; therefore his speech is significant importance.
During their meeting, Minister Peled brought the considerations Israel must take prior to any future agreement. “Who will the agreement be between? Will it be with Fatah or maybe Hamas? It is obvious we cannot ignore the conflict between Hamas and Fatah. Should we now consider reaching an agreement of a 3 state solution?
Benaim replied by saying that the Americans too demand that Hamas change its stands towards Israel, however it seems as though Hamas and Fatah can reach an agreement between themselves.
With reference to the Judea and Samaria building, Peled said that natural growth must be allowed in the large communities, as there are people who were born there and would like to continue living there with their families. Therefore, schools and kindergartens must be allowed to grow.
Benaim said that he has learned that the Israeli-American discussion is not necessarily only on the settlements issue but on the strong relationship between those two allies, based on trust. Benaim also thanked Minister Peled for his historical description and roots of the conflict and expressed his gratitude for Mr. Peled’s honest words.
